I think that's because it sounds more direct and planned than the meanderings to and fro and round about that seem to be breast cancer. Finding alternatives really isn't easy.

I think we can probably live with and beyond at the same time ...?

ElizaEliza Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02327422864558529134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719436986266142043.post-81842620244859328312011-07-04T21:54:51.507+01:002011-07-04T21:54:51.507+01:00Fab post....
I REALLY dislike 'fight' ...Fab post....

I REALLY dislike 'fight' 'battle' 'brave', but I sometimes struggle to find sufficiently descriptive/suitable words as I equally dislike 'journey' (mostly due to its now 'xfactor' connotations!)

and Jan, I had a similar weight comment. I'm easily 'overweight' and for the first time ever find myself criticised for (finally!) losing some weight!

I look forward to the day of 'living beyond'....
xxAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06546557131973530236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719436986266142043.post-31513546302374314902011-07-04T18:02:09.856+01:002011-07-04T18:02:09.856+01:00Thanks, Jan. Good to hear that you have spoken to various groups about this issue.

A pertinent illustration about the issue too - and congrats on the weight loss!

ElizaEliza Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02327422864558529134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719436986266142043.post-42510910832288196472011-07-04T05:01:27.202+01:002011-07-04T05:01:27.202+01:00Well put, Eliza. All the words on your "disli...Well put, Eliza. All the words on your "dislike" list are on mine as well. "Brave" especially gets to me for the reasons you give. I once told a lady who said I was brave that I was NOT brave because I did not have a choice. She promptly broke down in tears right in front of me. Many people, like her, have lost loved ones to cancer, so they want to hang on to hope by insisting on terminology that comforts them. But they shouldn't use us in the land of the living to project their own fears and losses.

I've lost 20 pounds intentionally, but often what I hear is, "Is that a good thing?" If anyone else lost the weight, that person would be complimented and told that he or she looks great. But not the cancer "survivor." I was miffed.

I also agree with the words you prefer. We should educate the ignorant about the terminology that heals, and that which hurts. I have spoken to various audiences on this topic, and many have heard it for the first time. So you are providing great information in this blog post. Brava.
JanJan Hasakhttp://www.janhasak.com/blognoreply@blogger.com
